Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This seminar will cover a number of American classics written between 1894 and 1925 (Crane, Dreiser, Sinclair, Fitzgerald, Dos Passos).

Please note: A list with four early topics will be posted at Prof. Mengel's office door and on the Department website in due time. Those students taking one of the four early topics will be enrolled in the seminar before places are allotted (250 points). Students volunteering should get into contact with Prof. Mengel by e-mail in the course of the holidays.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

18-20 pages essay, oral presentation and participation, final written test.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Students will become acquainted with the transition from the 19th to the 20th century novel, with typical forms and conventions, and with selected stylistic and narratological issues.

Prüfungsstoff

Oral presentations in class, accompanied by discussions.
