Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Contents: The course is intended for (advanced) students of English/Lehramt (UFE). It will introduce a selection of contemporary short stories from several areas of the English-Speaking world (works by British, American, Irish and Anglo-Indian authors) which are claimed to be suitable for teaching in the advanced ESL classroom (reference frame will be the current curriculum at Austrian AHS). The texts proposed include contemporary short fiction by both distinguished writers like Salman Rushdie, T. C. Boyle, Eilis Ni Dhuibhne and Helen Simpson and a few examples from popular fiction ("chick-lit"). Each of these texts will be examined in view of its heuristic, and particularly didactic potential and pedagogic value. The didactic premise that is to be questioned critically, is if, or to what extent, the teaching of contemporary fiction may (apart from advancing foreign language proficiency) help pupils to develop interpretative skills, to advance cross-cultural understanding, enlarge their ability for critical, moral and aesthetic judgement, advance their critical awareness of the condition of contemporary society and to deal with questions relating to fundamental issues of human existence.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Requirements: Regular attendance; active participation in all discussions in class; one presentation per participant (PPT, max.15 mins per speaker); final exam to be written in class (essay plus set of questions), which requires in-depth knowledge of all the primary texts and topics discussed during the semester.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Aims: To provide future teachers of English with current teaching materials and guidelines for teaching contemporary literature in the ESL classroom; to offer criteria for selecting literary texts for the purpose of practical teaching (for advanced learners); to advance students' interpretative skills, to explore jointly with the students the hermeneutic and didactic potential of a contextualized reading of literature; to enhance students' proficiency in oral and written English; to widen students' teaching- and MIT-based presentation skills.

Prüfungsstoff

Method: Interactive, computer-aided teaching with students' PPT-presentations, combined with plenum discussions; dialogue and exchange of information will be facilitated by the use of the e-learning platform "Moodle".

Texts: A "Reader" containing the literary texts dealt with in class can be purchased at the Copy-Studio (Schwarzspanierstraße 10) from 6 Oct. 2011.
