Information
Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
Contents: This interactive course will provide future teachers of English at an Austrian AHS with a wide range of literary texts (poems, short stories and a play) which are considered to be valuable teaching materials in view of the 'pool of topics' of the 'New Matura' as stipulated by the Austrian ministry of education (BMBF). The range of texts discussed encompasses the three major genres (drama, poetry, fiction) from various cultural backgrounds and historical periods. The didactic potential, and, particularly, their relevance for the requirements of the 'New Matura' will be explored in some detail. Moreover, the literary works discussed will also be considered in view of the requirements of the 'Vorwissenschaftliche Arbeit' (VWA, pre-academic paper). The texts selected include sonnets by Shakespeare, 'The Herbal Bed' (1996), a play by Peter Whelan (dealing with gender roles, sexual harassment and religious fundamentalism as experienced and historically recorded by Shakespeare's daughter Susanna) and short stories by T.C. Boyle, Hanif Kureishi, Roddy Doyle and one example of "chick-lit".
