Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

In this workshop we will analyse several twentieth century short stories from all periods and movements, ranging from late Victorian to postmodern. After establishing the theoretical parameters of the genre we will concentrate primarily on narrative strategies, character construction and thematic concerns. The historical and cultural contextualisation of the texts will be another major focus.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Introduce students to an important genre of English literature and familiarise them with its aesthetic features as well as its development over the last hundred years.

Prüfungsstoff

Introduction to the theory, history and analysis of the short story; students' presentations, class discussions

Literatur

The texts analysed will include short stories by Joseph Conrad, Katherine Mansfield, William Somerset Maugham, Angus Wilson, Muriel Spark, William Boyd and Graham Swift.
