Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The course is intended for advanced students intending to become teachers of English at an Austrian AHS/BHS. It will propose a range of contemporary works of fiction which are to be examined as to their didactic potential in the advanced EFL classroom. The texts discussed will also be considered in view of their suitability for the requirements of the Austrian “Zentralmatura“ and/or for their potential use as teaching materials or topics for a “Vorwissenschaftliche Arbeit“ (pre-academic paper). The list of authors proposed for discussion includes T.C. Boyle, Helen Simpson, Claire Kilroy, Salman Rushdie, Eilis Ni Dhuibhne, Roddy Doyle, William Trevor, Nadine Gordimer, and a few writers of popular fiction ("chick-lit"). Each of the works of fiction will be examined as to its pedagogic value and didactic potential (notably for advancing the pupils' cross-cultural understanding, moral and aesthetic judgement and for deepening their critical awareness of current political, social, religious, economic and environmental issues and the condition of humanity at large).

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Regular attendance; active participation in all meetings; one presentation per participant (PPT, max.15 mins per speaker); final exam to be written in class (essay plus set of questions), which requires in-depth knowledge of all the primary texts and the ability to respond critically to all the topics discussed during the semester.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

To provide future teachers of English with a wide variety of current literary teaching materials as well as a few guidelines for teaching contemporary literature in the (advanced) EFL classroom; to offer criteria for selecting contemporary short stories for the use in the AHS/BHS classroom, particularly in view of future requirements (Zentralmatura; Vorwissenschaftliche Arbeit); to advance students' interpretative skills and their proficiency in oral and written English; to enhance students' MIT-based presentation skills.

Prüfungsstoff

Interactive, computer-aided teaching with students' PPT-presentations, combined with plenum discussions; dialogue between students and exchange of information will be facilitated by the use of the e-learning platform "Moodle".

Literatur

Students are requested to acquire a copy of T.C. Boyle’s “The Tortilla Curtain“ (1995) and of Claire Kilroy’s novel “The Devil I Know“ (2012); A "Reader" containing the short stories dealt with in class will be available from the Copy-Studio (1010 Vienna, Schwarzspanierstraße 10) in October.
