Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Students will gain the knowledge of the creativity of the selected representative primarily 20th century American and Canadian Anglophone literary authors.
They will identify the most significant literary movements and authors, as well as describe the specificity of the cultural 20th century developments on the North-American continent. They will analyze and interpret the literary texts discussed by applying various critical approaches: the international theme, new migrant writing, Mexican-American frontera literature, American dream reconsidered, consumer aesthetics, gender issues, Canadian vs. American stereotypes, the notion of an American 20th century classic.

Oral presentation of a topic in class (to be written up as a paper), participation in class discussions, end-test. All students must read all the texts discussed in class.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Students will gain the knowledge of some of the best known 20th century North American Anglophone authors: novels (The Portrait of a Lady, The Great Gatsby, The House on Mango Street, Surfacing), novellas and short stories. The list of shorter literary works will be handed to students in class.
They will learn how to reflect on different interpretive standpoints, depending on the milieu and the contextualization of literary works in the appropriate socio-political context, and to formulate an effective, well argued and linguistically correct oral presentation of the seminar paper in class.
