Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

With breaking seemingly fixed barriers between high and low culture in the early 60s, inspiring everyone from The Beatles, Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen to every new generation of singer-songwriters, Bob Dylan’s influence on the American music or cultural landscape (and beyond) cannot be overestimated. Bob Dylan’s accolades include numerous Grammys, an Oscar, the Presidential Medal of Freedom and, since late 2016, the Nobel Prize in Literature. It makes sense to argue that Dylan was not awarded the Nobel Prize for the lyrics of his songs as written on the page only but for the artistic - and poetic – achievement of the sum total of his music, lyrics and performance.
This seminar invites you to investigate various aspects of Bob Dylan as a musical, literary and general cultural phenomenon by widely drawing from his works in music, literature, film and painting. Topics may include (but are not limited to) the (many) metamorphoses of Bob Dylan, fan cultures, aspects of performance, cultural appropriations of ‘Dylan’ in different cultural, regional, and political contexts, lyrics as and versus poetry, representations of Dylan by other artists, Dylan's Never-Ending Tour as a continuous performative act, Dylan's own film-productions and Dylan's (dabbling into) Fine Arts.
