Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

"And Now for Something Completely Different" -- Intertextual echoes, phrases and memes ("this is an ex-parrot") from comedy shows such as 'Monty Python's Flying Circus' or 'Fawlty Towers' ("Don't mention the war") have become part and parcel of popular culture and general knowledge. As evergreen classics of TV comedy they deserve close scrutiny from a literary-historical perspective. This course will set out by exploring their origins in the academic milieu of Oxbridge (e.g. 'Beyond the Fringe') before moving on to comedy shows based on other varieties of social and national diversification: e.g. 'Goodness Gracious Me', 'The Kumars at No. 42' (Black British), 'Father Ted' (Irish).

Regular attendance, active participation in class, PowerPoint presentation, final test (written).

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The aim of this course is to analyse how issues of ethnic, social, and cultural identities have been negotiated in TV comedies that have become cult classics.

Prüfungsstoff

Team presentations, class discussion; classroom discourse will be supplemented by visual aids.
