Information
Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
This course looks at recent works of literature that have been grouped under the term BrexLit. We will discuss the term critically and ask if and how we can apply it to genres as different as drama, essays, graphic novels and fiction. After a general discussion of the literary and cultural contexts, we will look at texts that have been received as BrexLit, including Zadie Smith's essay "Fences" (2016), Ali Smith's Winter (2017), Lucien Young and Leavis Carroll's Alice in Brexitland (2017), and Carol Ann Duffy and Rufus Norris's My Country: A Dramatic Work in Progress (2017). We will also discuss different theoretical approaches to see how the emergent genre of BrexLit relates to postcolonial theories, nationalism and class studies.
