Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The students will get acquainted with contemporary South African novels and films that reflect the state of the nation before and after the fall of apartheid.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Class participation, oral presentation (20-30 minutes), essay (15-17 pages - for BA students writing their BA thesis 25-27 pages), and final written test.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The students understand structure and style of the novels and can relate them to their historical, political and social context. They are capable of differentiating between the semiotic sign systems of narrative and film and apply their respective theories.

Prüfungsstoff

Oral presentations in class followed by discussions.

Literatur

André Brink, "A Dry White Season"; Athol Fugard, "Tsotsi"; J.M. Coetzee, "Disgrace"; Gillian Slovo, "Red Dust". All books will be available at the Campus bookstores. Films by Eushan Palcy, Gavin Hood, Steve Jacobs, and Tom Hooper. The films are available as DVDs via Amazon, or can be cheaply downloaded from the internet.
