Information
Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
In this lecture we will explore meanings of "Britishness" in relation to popular culture. Starting from a set of typical (and stereotypical) assumptions about what it is that seems to define "Britishness" - football and cricket, beer and tea, royals and working class, queuing and hooliganism, Britpop and punk etc. - we will approach the following questions: How is (and was) "Britishness" constructed and represented, especially in popular culture? How do people become national subjects? How does "Britishness" relate to class, gender, race, power, history and geography?
Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel
final 90-minutes written examination
Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
Understanding the concept of representation and discourse in reference to national identities, especially Britishness; understanding "culture" as 'networks of shared meanings' (Hall) and nations as 'imagined communities' (Anderson).
