Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This lecture course will introduce students to major theoretical approaches, selected practices and key issues relevant to the study of culture(s). It will begin by exploring the notion of "culture as text" and explore the "cultural studies turn" in the 'philological' disciplines. It is the aim of this course is to establish a sense of the manifold ways in which national, regional, and cultural identities in the British Isles have been constituted and mediated through visual media (cinema, TV, advertisements). Between them the visual 'texts' selected for analysis cover the geographical (and cultural) area known as the British Isles (i.e., England as well as the nations/regions on the 'Celtic Fringe').

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Written final test (on Dec. 19 and Jan. 30; further dates tba).

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

It is the aim of this lecture course to provide an introduction to the basic tools and methodologies of cultural studies and media studies and at the same time to supply basic background information ('cultural learnings') on the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland as well as the Republic of Ireland.

Prüfungsstoff

Lecture course; classroom discourse will be supplemented by visual aids (ppt, excerpts from documentary and feature films).
