Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This ONLINE (digital) lecture course explores popular media as an object of cultural studies, introducing students to theoretical approaches, key practices and selected issues relevant to the study of cultural text and preactices following the British tradition of Cultural Studies. We will especially (1) investigate the processes of meaning making in the production and consumption of cultural artifacts; (2) analyse the inter-related dynamics of representation, knowledge, power, and subjectivity; and (3) relate these issues to intersectional categories of race, gender, class and the nonhuman. Theoretical models and perspectives will be constantly grounded in practical examples, focused on but not limited to visual cultural material (films, TV, music, digital media, subcultures, cultural practices etc.).

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Final 90-minute written exam.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

This lecture course will provide students with a theoretical, analytical and historical introduction to British Cultural Studies and cultural theories related to media, technology, psychology, economics, race, gender, sexuality, and the nonhuman. The aim of this interactive lecture programme is to introduce students to the major theoretical approaches to the study of culture/s.
