Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

How can comics as a medium tackle complex topics from political conflicts to issues of mental health?

As a hybrid medium, comics or graphic narratives produce meaning at the intersection between verbal and visual images. Because of their high specificity, they are especially well-suited for developing analytical skills regarding medium-specific modes of meaning production. Taking a closer look at topics taken up by non-fiction comics, this format sets out to illustrate how the hybrid medium of comics approaches sensitive and difficult issues that shape
daily realities.
Analytical approaches will be based on semiotics, psychoanalytical theory, gender studies, queer theory, and postcolonial studies.
approaches taken will focus on how comics as a medium can be used in classroom settings and how a close analysis of this hybrid format helps to develop the overall media-literacy of students of English as verbal and visual images are not taken for granted but scrutinized for socio-cultural origin and meaning.
