Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This seminar will focus on language and identity in Asian British film and will be co-taught with Ute Smit. Specifically, we will be looking at feature films such as Bend It Like Beckham, East Is East, Ae Fond Kiss and Anita and Me.

We will refer to concepts from postcolonial theory, cultural theory and Black British studies in order to find out about identity construction in those films. In how far are identities performed, does white British identity feature as a norm, and what are the visible signs of a glocal identity construction? Our tools for analysis on a micro as well as on a macro level will be taken from film studies and visual and multimodal analysis.
