A Visual-Methodologies Class

How can we study images? What kind of literacy do we need to read their visual texts? What must we know about an image's circulation and display? What about its production? What about image technologies? And why are photos “never transparent windows onto the world” (Rose, 2016, p. 2)?

This course sets out to equip students with a visual-methodologies toolkit that will enable them to critically analyze a broad range of images: Renaissance portraits and World Press Photos, natural-history museums and Hollywood movies, and the persuasive visual language of advertising. Online analysis tasks and students’ own photography will put the course contents into practice.

Aimed at students in the BA and teacher-training programs, this class is designed to contribute to the methodological skills involved in critical media analysis. Readings, viewings and class discussions will be supplemented by student photography, online research-based learning, and media-analysis projects.
