Information
Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
Popular culture has often been marked by the absence of marginalized groups. However, those on the periphery have slowly come into view since the refugee “crisis” in 2015.This course shall examine the representations of refugees in both fictional and non-fictional film. Issues of note will be the recent war in the Ukraine, the over-representation of male refugees in the media in 2015, reactions and counter-reactions to the arrival of refugees as well as a comparison of filmic representations of refugees in different eras. Films will include: Chauka, Please Tell Us the Time (2017), Into the Fire: The Hidden Victims of Austerity in Greece (2013), District 9 (2009), The Land Between (2014) and others.Students will learn technical film terminology as well as how to apply film analysis as a tool for their future studies. The course will boast an interactive, pragmatic approach that emphasises practical skills that can be used by the students in their academic and professional careers.
