Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course explores the representation of Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander people in Australian film and media against the background of Australia’s history as a colonial settler nation. Students will learn not only of Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander people’s marginalisation in Australian popular culture but also of their own shaping and forming of the culture itself. Students will also learn a variety of film techniques, media analysis and cultural theory. Particular attention will be made to strengthening the ability to argue in a professional and academic manner. The course will analyse Ten Canoes (2006), Rabbit Proof Fence (2002), They Have Come To Stay (2008), The Nightingale (2018), Mabo (2012), and The Australian Dream (2019).
