Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Narrative genres offer ideas about gender and sexual identity informed by the cultures that produce them according to their constructed ideas of what it means to be a woman or a man. Approached from this angle gender becomes a regulatory fiction enacted not just between individuals in a society but also on the big and the small screen.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

In addition to the visual material discussed in class, students have to read a selection of secondary texts. They will be asked to hold short presentations in class, hand in written assignments as well as take a final written exam.
All the articles and excerpts from books will be provided online via MOODLE.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

What do narrative genres tell us about gender identity in general and masculinities in particular?
This CMA class will look at the many narrative myths of masculinity embedded in different narrative genres found in mass media. The aim of the class is to identify the ingredients used in these types of narratives to construct discourses on masculinities.

Prüfungsstoff

This course will encourage students to take a critical look at naturalized assumptions about narrated masculinities. The work done in class will invite students to ask how discourses on masculinity are constructed within narrative genres and how these constructions govern what it means to perform masculinity successfully on and off screen.
