Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

From Trekkers and Gaters, Pottheads, Twihards, the Beehive, Beliebers to Whovians
– if you are not a fan of one of these fandoms yourself, you have probably heard of fan-communities like these. But what defines a fan? And what does it mean to talk of fanboys, fangirls and fanenbies? How are fans represented in popular culture, how do fans represent themselves – are these representations gendered, and what are the implications thereof?

This course will provide an introduction to fan studies, discussing fans and fandoms alike and viewing this field and fan-texts through the lens of gender and queer studies.
We will consider how research in the field of fan studies has addressed questions of gender, the body and sexuality. Moreover, students will examine fan work like fanfiction, fanvideos, podfiction, fanart or cosplay and investigate gender in the course of their analysis.

In this course students will critically engage with texts from fan and gender studies and familiarize themselves with a selection of methods and apply them to analyze multimedia material. Students will both reflect on and question their own positioning and perspective as fans and researchers.

After completing this course students will have gained an in-depth understanding of fan studies and fannish discourses and the ability to examine representations of gender in fan works as popular culture artifacts.
