Content

How can we study images? What kind of literacy do we need to read their visual texts? What must we know about an image's circulation and display? What about its production? What about image technologies? And why are photos “never transparent windows onto the world” (Rose, Visual Methodologies 2)?
This course equips participants with the tools to critically analyze a broad range of visual materials: Renaissance portraits and press photography, museum exhibits and Hollywood movies, computer-game imagery, and the persuasive visual language of advertising.
