Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

How do popular cultures in TV shows and comic books construct, imagine and produce maleness and masculinity?
How are men, their bodies and the gender identity constructed as inherently belonging to them - masculinity - in popular cultures today and yesterday? What has changed, what has remained constant?
What are male bodies allowed to do, what are masculinities allowed embody?
In how far is the gaze of Hollywood studios and consumer culture still exclusively male as Laura Mulvey postulated in 1979 and only capable of constructing men as active subjects while producing women strictly as passive objects.
In how far can an ideology like patriarchy allow male bodies to exist as an object of desire in films, TV-shows and comic books?
Is what Raewyn Connell defined as hegemonic and complicit masculinities still relevant when it comes to producing image of male bodies and masculinities in different media? How do heteronormativity, homophobia and heterosexism factor into the construction and production of masculinities?
During the course of this CMA students will familiarize themselves with critical concepts from gender, queer and post-colonial theories. They are asked to use these concepts to critically examine and discuss different texts from film to TV and comic books that produce images of male bodies and ideas about masculinities.
