In cooperation with TBA2,1 Exhibit TIDALECTICSIn this blocked course we will explore contemporary multimedia art that aims at shedding critical light on how we have conceived the oceans in the past and present. We will do so mostly on-site at the TBA21 (Augarten), our host for this course. You will explore the artworks of the exhibition TIDALECTICS (open til Nov. 19, 2017) first, on your own; second; in teams of 2; third, in a special guided tour (by Clemens A. Rettenbacher, TBA 21), and with the help of core Anglophone texts in critical maritime studies. We will look at oceans through mainly postcolonial, Caribbean Studies, race and gender critical, and ecocritical lenses. With all of this input, students will delve into the world of multimedia art and analyze it from a cultural studies approach (re. power relations, articulation, negotiation of meaning, intermediality et al.)
Each team will give a presentation on one of the artworks and write up their findings.
