Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The course charts the vibrant territory of modern Irish drama from its beginnings at the time of the Literary Revival up to the present day. It examines the nature of the Irish dramatic canon and the features of what typically passes for an 'Irish play', and proceeds to discuss recent tendencies in Irish theatre. All plays are interpreted in their socio-political and cultural contexts; principal issues to be addressed include the gradual shift from re-negotiations of collective identity towards a focus on the individual, the idea of theatre as a form of political intervention, and various uses of humour.

Prüfungsstoff

Students will be expected to know all primary texts covered in class, together with their socio-political, cultural and literary contexts.

Oral Presentation
Oral presentations should be of 20 min duration, students are encouraged to use powerpoint wherever relevant. Typically, the presentation should outline the historical and cultural context of the first staging of the play under discussion, and should pose questions concerning the play text that will become the basis for the subsequent in-class discussion. Students are advised to discuss their presentation with the course instructor at least one week in advance.

Final Essay
Essay topics are chosen by the students; however, they must be consulted with the course instructor in advance of writing. The essay should be a research paper of 2500-3000 words, based on the study of appropriate secondary sources and including references and bibliographical details for all works cited or paraphrased (if in doubt, please consult the course instructor). Any form of plagiarism will not be tolerated and will result in a fail grade.

Submission deadline: The ultimate deadline for submitting all work is 18 February 2018; no later submissions will be accepted. Students requiring the course grade as a prerequisite for enrolment in the summer semester are strongly encouraged to submit their work early. Submissions can be made in a hard copy or by e-mail; submissions made after 25 January by e-mail only.
