Principles and practice of teaching writing

Prüfungsimmanente Lehrveranstaltung

We plan to share our approach to teaching writing, and our experiences, both successful and unsuccessful, with you in the hope that this will encourage you to develop and reflect upon your own approach to teaching writing. The course will be very practical and you should leave with a range of materials ready to use in your future classroom.

Please note:
• Attendance at first lesson is compulsory.
• Prior to first lesson, first week of October, please pick up and complete Questionnaire available from outside Mrs. Schwarz-Peaker’s office.

The topics will include:
• Students as writers
• Assessing textbooks
• Transforming activities in textbooks
• Choosing “texts” to make own material
• Writing: vocabulary
• Writing: grammar
• Writing: cohesion
• Planning: semester/lessons/teacher time
• Developing assessment guidelines
• Giving effective feedback

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Assessment will be based on class participation, project work, observation and a writing assignment.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The objectives of this course are to raise students’ awareness of issues involved in writing and teaching writing, to prepare students for their role as teachers and to assist students in developing their ability to choose and develop material for teaching writing.

Prüfungsstoff

Interactive; group work.

Literatur

Material will be made available via Moodle. Recommended books available in Anglistik library include: Writing, Patricia Hedge: Oxford 1994; Teaching and Researching Writing, Ken Hyland: Pearson Longman 2009.
