Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Spoken Language in the Classroom:
This course will address the role of spoken language in the classroom by looking at the teaching OF speaking as well as the use of speaking IN ORDER TO teach. We will be addressing theoretical issues regarding classroom discourse analysis, the nature of spoken language and, of course, the methodological issues of teaching speaking.
More specifically, we will address:
- Conceptualisations of L2 speaking
- Teaching methodologies for speaking
- Evaluation and creation of activities/materials for speaking in class
Assessment of L2 speaking
Classroom discourse (incl. assessment discourse)

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Regular attendance is required for this course. Assessment is based on the following components:
1) Reaction to an academic paper chosen from the bibliography and marked with an asterisk* (or a different one after consultation with Prof. Hüttner) of no more than 500 words outlining a) main ideas or finings b) relevance to you as a (future) teacher (of CLIL) and c) issues/questions arising from it. (20% of final grade) Hand-in date 6 April 2018
2) Presentation of an evaluation of a selection of activities/tasks for teaching speaking in class against criteria based on your reading of the literature (20% of final grade, in pairs)
3) Lesson analysis focusing EITHER on the classroom discourse in an EFL class OR on the teaching of L2 speaking. You need to include a structured description of the lesson in the main text and a transcription of about 5 minutes of relevant passages in the appendix.. Access to data will be provided via open data sources and the tutor’s materials. Length: 3,000 words. Hand-in date 30 June 2018. 60% of overall mark
