Literature in the EFL Classroom

Contents:
In this class, we will be looking at ways of promoting the reading of literature in the EFL classroom and at aims and principles underlying such approaches. We will investigate patterns that guide the reading of texts in a foreign language, explore a wide range of literary texts and genres relevant to the classroom (e.g. short stories, pop songs, graded readers, poetry, novels, etc.), critically evaluate teaching materials and will ourselves engage in (potential) classroom activities.

Aims:
- Students get to know principles and challenges of teaching and reading literature in the EFL classroom.
- Students become aware of the potential roles of literature and culture in the Austrian school system (school books, curricula, SRDP, etc.).
- Students are introduced to a range of texts that can be used in the EFL classroom.
- Students try out methods to teach the reading of literary texts in the EFL classroom.
- Students translate their findings into a series of lesson plans designed for an Austrian school classroom.

Methods:
- Group and plenary discussions
- Lecturer input
- Micro-teaching
- Group and individual presentations
