Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course is designed to give future teachers a basic grounding in the core areas of assessment, including construct definition, test specifications, item formats, validity of assessments, reliability of judgements and test practicality. The assessment of all four skills, plus grammar and vocabulary, will be covered to varying degrees (incl. analysing/adapting existing tasks), as are rater training for writing and the practicalities of formative and summative assessment in the Austrian classroom.

The major aims are to
* develop a basic understanding of fundamental concepts in language assessment with a special focus on the classroom context
* understand how to implement these concepts in the selection, development and evaluation of assessment instruments used
* understand the links between assessment, testing, learning and teaching
* help participants to become confident enough to continue learning about language assessment on their own

Methods:
Classroom projects, individual/pair/group work (achievement test, rater training), discussion of readings, critical reflection on key concepts in language assessment, critical evaluation of assessment instruments

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Assessment will be based on students' own/group projects, continuous assessment (classwork/homework), one theory check-up, and one final individual written assignment.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Attendance (max. 2 absences) = participating in activities as defined for the week (details on moodle).

Your final grade for this course is based on three components:

Part 1: Classwork/homework (individual/in pairs/groups) incl. analysing/developing/evaluating two tasks suitable for an achievement test (20%+10%), rater training for writing (10%) and a self-/peer assessment task (5%). The assessment grids/keys for the different assignments are given in moodle and reflect the process and the product.

Part 2: One mid-term open book analysis of a writing prompt lasting max. 90 minutes in relation to Texts 1-6 in the reader (20%)

Part 3: Individual final written assignment, 1,500-2,000 words (35%)

Two of the three parts as well as the overall score must be positive.

Grading scale: 1 (sehr gut) 100-90%; 2 (gut) 89-80%; 3 (befriedigend), 79-70%; 4 (genügend) 69-60%; 5 (nicht genügend) 59-0%.
