Update: 02.11. All classes in November will be digital (collaborate).
HYBRID with Collaborate, i.e. a mixture of on-site and online sessions in class time is planned. There is space for 25 students in SR3. That means that everybody allocated to the class could come to the on-site sessions. Those who cannot attend on-site will follow the class live via collaborate. Bring along your laptop/tablet/smartphone and headphones/mic/headset – we could end up using breakout rooms on-site too! We’ll then see what works best in practice. More details about signing up in moodle.* Planned f2f classes on-site: 08.10., 12.11., 26.11., 03.12., 17.12., 28.01.* Tech check for Collaborate: date(s) and time(s) to be announced in moodle
* Dates for the online mid-term open book analysis: regardless which of my two Assessment classes you are attending, you can do the online open book analysis at one of the following times: Thur 19.11. 8.15-9.45 or 12.15-13.45.

This course is designed to give future teachers a basic grounding in the core areas of assessment, including construct definition, test specifications, item formats, validity of assessments, reliability of judgements and test practicality. The assessment of all four skills, plus grammar and vocabulary, will be covered to varying degrees (incl. analysing/adapting existing tasks), as are rater training for writing/speaking and the practicalities of formative and summative assessment in the Austrian classroom.The major aims are to
* develop a basic understanding of fundamental concepts in language assessment with a special focus on the classroom context;
* understand how to implement these concepts in the selection, development and evaluation of assessment instruments used;
* understand the links between assessment, testing, learning and teaching;
* help participants to become confident enough to continue learning about language assessment on their own.Methods:
Classroom projects, individual/pair/group work (achievement test project, rater training), discussion of readings, critical reflection on key concepts in language assessment, critical evaluation of assessment instruments
