Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Aims and contentsThe course aims at developing a reflective and critical understanding of English Language Teaching in students through a consideration of the guiding principles underlying professional ELT.The key principles of ELT discussed will cover:• Principle of research-based teaching• Principle of accountability in teaching• Principle of inclusionWithin each of these, a selection of thematic areas will be discussed in greater detail, such as:• The role of theory in teaching practice• Professionalism in language teaching• Standardisation, including E8 standard, standardised final exams• CEFR, ELP, competence models, curricula• EPOSTL• Multilingualism in the ELT classroom• Differentiation• Inclusion of neurodiverse learnersIn addition, the course will encourage in-depth engagement by students with a range of current approaches to EFL teaching. This will include:• Presenting, trying out and evaluating selected approaches to EFL teaching• Discussion of the "post-method era"• Critical evaluation of CLT• Influence of general trends on ELT, such English as a lingua franca, new media in teachingMethodsA mixture of methods will be employed, including• both individual and group (online) activities in and outside of class time• synchronous discussions in class• short presentations by the lecturer• group presentations by students

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Course work (active participation in class activities, regular reading & other assignments, participation in (online) discussions & moodle activities, etc.); presenting an approach (group presentation/peer teaching); two-part written exam.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Attendance (max. 2 absences)1) Presenting an approach (30%)2) Written exam part 1, applications (20%)3) Written exam part 2, reflection (25%)Course work (25%) must be done in addition to the three named parts; three out of the four parts must be positive.Grading scale: 1 (sehr gut) 100-90%; 2 (gut) 89-80%; 3 (befriedigend), 79-70%; 4 (genügend) 69-60%; 5 (nicht genügend) 59-0%.

Prüfungsstoff

Group presentation, 2-part written exam, course work, as listed above, based on topics covered in class (see Ziele, Inhalte und Methode/course schedule). Details on assignments given in class and on moodle.
