Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

A survey course designed to introduce some of Ireland's major authors and discuss their work in its broader cultural and political context (Irish, Anglophone and European respectively). The course focuses primarily on a close reading of selected shorter texts (prose, poetry and drama), guided by preliminary questions that are to be briefly answered by students in writing prior to each class.

Attendance and active participation in course discussions (a maximum of three absences will be allowed); written answers to preliminary questions on a week-to-week basis (provided on moodle); final portfolio.

Final portfolio: 50%

Prüfungsstoff

Students will be expected to know all primary texts covered in class, together with their socio-political and literary contexts, as a basis for preparing their final portfolio.

Portfolio Topics
Students are to choose one question from one of three sets (which will be provided on Moodle) and discuss it in the space of 800-1000 words, based on the study of relevant secondary sources. Secondary material must be appropriately referenced (if in doubt, please consult the course instructor). Any form of plagiarism will not be tolerated and will result in a fail grade.

Submission deadline: suggested submission dates are as follows: Set I - 23 November 2017, Set 2 - 14 December 2017, Set III - 31 January 2018. The ultimate deadline for submitting all work is 5 February 2018; no later submissions will be accepted. Submissions can be made in a hard copy or by e-mail; submissions made after 25 January by e-mail only.
