In order to ensure the safety of everybody involved, this course will primarily take place online. The course will contain live/synchronous elements (live, interactive online sessions each week) and asynchronous elements (quizzes and small tasks which you can do at your own pace and which will also make up for live sessions that you could not attend.)

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

In this course, we will delve into the occasionally daunting, yet endlessly fascinating and enticing world of modernist literature and culture. We will study a range of modernist texts from all genres (some of these by way of excerpts from longer texts) by Virginia Woolf, James Joyce, Georgia Douglas Johnson, T.S. Eliot and others, investigating modernism as an artistic movement as well as an ever-changing, complex concept. The topic of Black modernism and the relationship between modernism and the Harlem Renaissance will be a key topic of discussion, highlighting the blind spots and gaps that traditional accounts of modernism often display.
We will introduce and revise a broad range of approaches, providing participants with the basic theoretical tools for the critical analysis and interpretation of literary texts.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

- regular live online attendance and participation in discussions via chat (asynchronous make-up tasks and quizzes available!)
- expert input in one of the sessions (either a live presentation on BigBlueButton/Collaborate, a pre-recorded presentation + live discussion on BBB or in the Chat or alternative types of input agreed on with me in advance)
- portfolio consisting of four individual assignments (critical review, close reading of key passages, blog post, creative task)

(All of the tasks and components that make up your grade in this course will be explained and discussed in detail during the first session.)

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

50 points portfolio
25 points oral presentation
25 points active participation and/or asynchronous tasks and quizzes

Students have to fulfill all course requirements (each with at least 50%) and to score at least 60 points altogether to pass this course.

3: 80-71p
4: 70-60p
5: 59-0p

Prüfungsstoff

This is an interactive course with continuous assessment ("prüfungsimmanente Lehrveranstaltung"). In addition to handing in a written portfolio, participants are expected to read all set texts and actively participate in class (and/or complete asynchronous make-up tasks) throughout the semester.
There will be no written exam.

Literatur

Please buy a copy of Virginia Woolf, Orlando (I would recommend the Penguin Modern Classics edition, which has a range of useful annotations, but generally, you're free to choose the edition. A personal request: Please buy/order the book in a local bookshop, if possible.)

The complete list of set texts will be announced in the first session. Short stories, poems, excerpts from longer novels, and theoretical/secondary literature will be provided on Moodle.
