The English language in Austria and many other countries has long crossed the border of being a foreign language learned in a classroom context. On the contrary, English is frequently used in everyday situations. Especially in online contexts English has recently established itself as a means of communication next to German and other languages.

Besides other interesting effects, this role of English has been investigated in connection to language learning and, more particularly, vocabulary development. While vocabulary growth is traditionally linked to instructed vocabulary learning in some form of classroom setting, the question arises whether the increasing influence of English in everyday life situations might have some beneficial influence on vocabulary development of English users.

By conducting research projects in small groups, students will examine everyday language phenomena and their impact on vocabulary development. In the process participants will learn about relevant research areas (e.g. Extramural English, vocabulary studies, vocabulary testing etc.) and empirical research methods (e.g. opinion surveys, proficiency measurement (esp. vocabulary testing).

How we adapt to the CORONA situation is explained on our Moodle Platform
