Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course aims to help students in the process of writing their MA. We will consider the various stages of MA-writing; consider the choice of primary and secondary sources as well as the types of questions that are worth pursuing. We will also look into the structure of the thesis, argumentation, and support. In the course, participants will have a chance to present their work in progress and get (peer-)feedback. It is recommended that the students have already started their MA-writing process (found a supervisor and the topic).
Each participant will submit materials/present work samples, which your peers will read and comment upon and which we will discuss together. We will address questions concerning individual projects, selection of sources, methodology, procedures for research, general MA guidelines and expectations, and academic writing style and formats. In each section, next so tackling a different issue related to the MA writing process and product, we will focus on your individual projects. These discussions will be based on the materials presented by individual students (presentation/slides, handout (abstract/ToC, text excerpts).

Course evaluation is based on:
(A) class participation and preparation of course materials (20%)
(B) project presentation (50%)
3 min pitch; 3-4 min problem - where do you need help and assessment? Altogether 15 min for every person. (Students are grouped depending on where they are in their process of writing; only then the work they should be doing is distributed.)
(C) assignment (30%)
Group presentation and handout with best practices. In groups you will prepare 1-page handouts for your colleagues concerning chosen topics (etherpad list) and best practices, and present this in class. The presentation will also include one exercise of your choice.

The minimum requirements for passing the course are:
(a) regular class attendance (max. 2 missed sessions)
(b) active class participation
(c) giving project presentation on time
(d) handing in assignments on time
(e) attaining the pass rate of 60 points

Marks in %:
1 (very good): 90-100%
2 (good): 80-89%
3 (satisfactory): 70-79%
4 (pass): 60-69%
5 (fail): 0-59%

Points must be collected in all of these areas to pass. The benchmark for passing this course is at 60%.
