Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Mentoring and coaching processes have long become an integrated and widely established tool for reflection and professional support in our working lives. In this course, you will take on the role of both the coach and the coachee in the context of introductory lecture courses.
This hands-on experience will enable you to infer essential implications for your (future) professional life as a teacher, trainer in adult education, employer or manager in a wide range of different institutions.

(1) Advanced BA and BEd students will

In connection with the introductory lecture courses you will independently mentor a small group of STEOP students by:
- introducing them to academic life and activities in the context of studying English
- assisting and accompanying their individual learning processes
- enabling well structured academic exchange and discussion
- providing them with tools of self- and stress-management
- familiarizing them with the special situation of a digital/hybrid university due to Covid-19 restrictions

(2) MA students will

Mentor a small group of BA students who are in the process of writing their BA thesis by:
o introducing them to managing theirwriting project successfully: choosing a topic, planning, carrying outand finishing their thesis
o familiarizing them with tools to overcomeimpediments to the writing process (writer's block, self doubt, lack of motivationetc.)
o facilitating peer discussion and sharing their own experiences with writing a BA thesis
o assisting students with education and career choices after finishing the BA

Prior to your work as a mentor, you will be familiarized with some basic concepts, methods and tools of mentoring and coaching in an introductory workshop .
In five supervision meetings you will discuss, share and reflect your experience, success and challenges with your fellow coaching students and a professional supervisor. In addition, there will be theoretical input to various aspects of process oriented learning and training such as:
- group setup and tools of group analysis and the special case of online coaching settings
- defining learning goals
- case work and peer consultation
- basic principles of group dynamics
- structuring feedback processes
- evaluation and transfer to other learning contexts
- specifics of online coaching and facilitation

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

*active participation in starting workshop and supervision meetings*self-organized study group meetings with STEOP students (5 meetings)*final reflective assignment (1,500-2,000 words)

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Students will:
be familiar with some of the basic concepts of coaching/mentoring,
be able to use and/or adapt these methods for guiding learning processes (of groups) in their professional contexts.

Prüfungsstoff

Based on the concepts of experienced-based and process-oriented learning, students use the seminar group as a resource for their own learning process.Both methods of teacher-trainer education and applied groups dynamics will be used.Starting workshop and supervision meetings: mix of lecture-style informative and interactive group work sessions, small group and all class discussions, pair work, visualization, coaching, supervision, counselling, case work.
