Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

In this course we will discuss particular topics and key concepts within the philosophy of science, which are especially important to linguistics. Among these topics are: different definitions and models of language and the linguistic sign, and the question of meaning in linguistics, philosophy and cultural theory. We will also explore distinctions and questions such as sense and reference; text, discourse, context, pretext and inter-text; speech act and performativity; what are (linguistic) facts and how do they relate to theories? Are there empirical facts independent of theories about them? What does it mean to say of something that it is constructed by language or discourse?

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Regular attendance, participation in class discussions, preparation and chairing of sessions on specific topics, minutes, shorter written assignments.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The aim of the course is to learn about the basic concepts, problems and models in the philosophy of science an their relevance for linguistics.

Prüfungsstoff

Lecturing, discussion of texts and presentations.
