Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The aim of the course is to provide an overview about the major political and social challenges and developments in the contemporary Baltic States (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania). The course will concentrate on various topics: the consolidation of the Baltic democracies in the context of the post-communist transition; social problems and poverty; political culture, civil society and participation; gender equality and position of women; ethnic relation and the problems with the Russian minority.
There will be both seminars and lectures at the course. Seminar discussions and group work will concentrate on the texts the students are expected to read for the seminars.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Attendance at seminars (40%) and a comparative essay (60%).
Permitted materials: seminar texts and relevant reading materials selected by the students themselves or recommended by the professor.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Attendance at 4 seminars and at least 51 points for the essay.

Prüfungsstoff

In the end of the course the students are expected to submit a comparative essay about the political or social developments in the Baltic States (5-7 pages). The students are free to choose the topic for their essay.
