Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

"It happened, therefore it can happen again; this is the essence of what we have to say" is the well-known quote from Primo Levi (1919-1987), by which visitors are greeted as they enter the recently renovated Hollandsche Schouwburg in Amsterdam. Once a theatre, it became a deportation centre where Jews were assembled from July 1942 awaiting their deportation. Today, the building has a memorial and education function.
Remembrance can take many forms, from small statues in parks to nationwide commemorations. Literature also plays a crucial role in combating oblivion and indifference. Authors in the Netherlands have targeted children to educate them about the history of World War II and the Shoah. This tradition has made significant contributions to Dutch children's literature: hundreds of books have been published for young readers about World War II and the persecution of Jews in the Netherlands.
In this course, we will explore this fascinating strand and consider several Dutch books addressing World War II and the persecution of Jews (in their German translations). We will begin with an orientation on the history of World War II and the Shoah in the Netherlands and contemporary remembrance practices. We will then examine "classics" such as Anne Frank’s diary and Star Children (1986) by Clara Asscher-Pinkhof, as well as more recently published children's books that narrate the Shoah and World War II.

Primary aims of the course:
Students are familiar Dutch children's books about the persecution of Jews with a focus on trends, themes and the authors.
Students are able to reflect on the children's literature on the Shoah, in the Netherlands and beyond.
Students are familiar with narrative techniques presenting the persecution of Jews to young readers.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

The course is subject to continuous assessment. Students are required to attend and participate actively during the meetings. Students may not miss more than 3 meetings.
Throughout the semester students will complete a few short quizzes on the background reading material (25% of final grade).
By the end of the course, teams of students will record a podcast in which they discuss one of the children’s books we considered in the course (50% of final grade). During the semester, each team will present their script for the podcast (25% of final grade). The (technical) details of the final assignment will be discussed in our introductory meeting.

Each of the assignments will have to be completed with a passing grade. See weight of assignments above.
