135054 PS Sozialgesch. der Literatur (PS): Russian Literature in Exile (2019S)

Vladimir Nabokov’s name needs no introduction, but it would be wrong to consider him the only gifted representative of Russian exile literature. This course introduces students to the wealth of Russian émigré literature, with a focus on comparative study of cultures viewed through the writing of twentieth-century authors.
The course will address such issues as reasons for emigration, particularly for each of its waves, and the contribution of immigrant writers to Western literature. Knowledge of Russian is not required.
