Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Objective: Before the introduction of Buddhism in Tibet and the Himalayas there was a pre-existing indigenous religion called Bon. After the diffusion of Buddhism, Bon religion developed receiving the influence of Buddhist doctrines. This seminar aims to: 1) clarify common Abhidharma thoughts shared between these two religions and 2) examine the peculiarities of Bonpo theory.
Contents: There are totally 10 lectures as follows: (*Note that the contents of these lecture are flexible and will accommodate students’ feedback)
• Lecture 1: Introduction: history of Buddhism and Bon; history of Abhidharma philosophy; bibliography of Bonpo Abhidharma scriptures.
• Lecture 2: intensive reading of Bonpo Abhidharma texts (such as Bon sgo gsal byed and Srid pa’i mdzod phug).
• Lecture 3: intensive reading of Bonpo Abhidharma texts.
• Lecture 4: intensive reading of Bonpo Abhidharma texts.
• Lecture 5: intensive reading of Bonpo Abhidharma texts.
• Lecture 6: intensive reading of Bonpo Abhidharma texts.
• Lecture 7: intensive reading of Bonpo Abhidharma texts.
• Lecture 8: intensive reading of Bonpo Abhidharma texts.
• Lecture 9: intensive reading of Bonpo Abhidharma texts.
• Lecture 11: concluding discussion.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Assessment/Grade: Students are required to submit a short paper by the last lecture. (Details such as length and theme will be explained in the lecture.)
