Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course will provide an examination of the development of form and content of the novel in response to the political, legal and economic context in the period 1948 to the present. The lament in the academy that politics and literature should be kept apart is correctly decried as an impossibility in South Africa. JM Coetzee (obliquely), Gordimer (directly), Mda (pedantically, critically) etc. are primarily reflections not on the state of a universal human soul, but on the historically contingent situation of individuals and collectives in South Africa and the coming to terms with reality at particular historical junctions.
