Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Jinendrabuddhi's Viśālāmalavatī Pramāṇasamuccayaṭīkā is the only preserved Sanskrit commentary in the narrower sense on Dignāga's Pramāṇasamuccaya, a foundational work of the epistemological tradition of Buddhism. Jinendrabuddhi frequently refers to and quotes otherwise unavailable works relevant to the context. This as well as the fact that Jinendrabuddhi's commentary preserves large parts of the Sanskrit text of the Pramāṇasamuccaya, which survives only in Tibetan translations, makes this commentary immensely important for understanding the history of the Buddhist epistemological tradition and also that of the major non-Buddhist philosophical traditions of South Asia.
The focus and goal of the class will be the editing and translation of the Sanskrit text of the fifth chapter of Jinendrabuddhi's commentary dealing with verbal cognition and its objects. Participants will become acquainted with philological-historical methods and editorial techniques, and are encouraged to participate in discussions led by the main editors.
