Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Do African presidents stay too long in power? Can military coup guarantee democracy? What role can African female leaders play? These are questions that regularly come to the fore when speaking about African politics. The course offers a general introduction to the study of leadership in African politics and aims to provide critical insight for students to better analyze African political issues.

The course is organized in two parts. The first part (sessions 1-7) introduces key concepts and approaches in the study of the African state and African politics. We will first explore the questions of the control of a territory inherited from colonization, the impact of the colonial legacy on state institutions, the conceptualization of power (personal or institutionalized, neopatrimonialism). We will then reflect on some of the tools to gain or remain in power: political tribalism and presidentialism. Finally, we will explore the issue of gender and power.

The second part of the course will be dedicated to analyzing present trends in African politics (sessions 8-13), focusing on presentations of case studies by the students, followed by general discussion.

The selected readings (academic publications, newspaper articles and/or opinion pieces) will provide historical and conceptual background to African politics while providing ground for a critical discussion to reflect on the potential and limits of African leadership in shaping and changing political situations.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Participation (50% of the final grade).
Presentation of a case study (50% of the final grade).
