Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The course aims at providing a general introduction into history and development of religion in Japan. Throughout the semester, it addresses various religious traditions that have found its way into Japan and have affected the shaping of the distinctive Japanese religious thought (Shintō, Buddhism, Confucianism, folk religion, Christianity). The primal objective of the course shall be the development of Japanese religious thought and interaction between Shintō and Buddhism in the course of Japanese history.

The course is structured as a combination of lectures and pictorial presentations of audio-visual material related to the subject.

o The Zen Schools
o Buddhist Scriptures: The Lotus Sūtra and the Heart Sūtra
o Shintō-Buddhist interaction (Suwa Festival)
o Christianity in Japan
