Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Asvagho?a (1st-2nd century CE), one of the earliest and most brilliant Buddhist poets, is the author of a complete biography of the Buddha Sakyamuni, the Buddhacarita ("Deeds / Acts / Life of the Buddha"). This work, however, is as celebrated as it is little known as regards its sources and its contribution to several areas of Buddhist learning and creativity, including philosophy. Moreover, Asvagho?a’s own sectarian affiliation and doctrinal inclination are unknown. The aim of this seminar is to shed light on the issues of the poet’s philosophical innovativeness, sources and ordination lineage through a close reading of selected parts of the Buddhacarita and its likely Vinaya sources. It is divided into two parts, one dedicated to reading excerpts from the Buddhacarita (mainly from Cantos XII, XVI and XVII), the other centred on doctrinal, literary and histori(ographi)cal analysis.
