Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Part I General introduction to health and development: selected issues & perspectives using examples from South East Asian and African countries and Austria. 1)Historical context: Influences of colonialism on health, health systems and health perceptions; South-North relations and shifting discourses on global health; global contexts of & debates on migration of health workers. 2) Societal contexts & determinants of health (how various political, economic, legal & cultural factors affect health statuses of specific population groups); Case Studies: Migrants’ health in Austria and Thailand

Part II Methodological approaches to investigating health as a societal issue.
Utilisation of qualitative methods in investigation into health issues (i.e. Biographical Interviews, Focus Group Discussion, etc.), application of these research approaches within health promotion and development aid.

Regular attendance to classes
Written assignments (individual: can be written in German or English and can be chosen from several given optional topics), presentation (group)

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The course introduces students to different perspectives on and contexts of health and development in order to establish a common ground to critically analyse and discuss interrelations between health and development. Furthermore students are introduced to selected methodologies of health research and promotion within the context of development work with the aim to allow a basic understanding and critical reflections of the presented approaches.

Prüfungsstoff

The course will be conducted in English and German
Following the introductory session students will make group presentations on different topics based on selected articles and own literature review; different forms of discussion will be used to subsequently debate different aspects of each topic; in order to further common debate all students will be asked to read a short article in preparation of each session
