Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course is an intensive introduction to the architecture of Lexical-Functional Grammar, with a discussion of how this syntactic theory addresses issues such as levels of representation, X’ theory, Structure-Function Correspondence, Lexical Mapping Theory, binding, control, optimality, and the syntax-semantics interface.
Content: Preliminaries
The architecture of Lexical-Functional Grammar
Constituent Structure
X' Theory
Functional Structure
Structure-Function Correspondence
Argument Structure
Lexical-Mapping Theory
Functional and Anaphoric Control
Optimal Syntax
Summary and further research.
Method: Class interaction will be in the form of lectures, student presentations, computer-based electronic interaction

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

1. To enable students acquire a good knowledge of the formal architecture of Lexical Functional Grammar (LFG).
2. To enable students critique materials analyzed within the framework of LFG.
3. To train students to use the tools of LFG in analyzing basic linguistics data.
