Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Theories of translation and interpretation have always played a prominent, if often overlooked, role in the history and transmission of Buddhist thought in Asia. This course will investigate traditional and modern theories and techniques of translation with the aim of improving the knowledge and competency that students bring to the task of translating and interpreting Buddhist texts. Students taking this course will have the opportunity to develop their skills in reading and translating Buddhist texts by applying the theoretical knowledge gained to the concrete task of translating Tibetan materials into English. They will be required to read and discuss a wide range of materials drawn from Translation Studies, Hermeneutics, Cultural Studies, and Buddhist Studies concerning the leading principles and methodogies of translation and interpretation. A basic knowledge of classical literary Tibetan is required.
