Information
Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
This course aims at building on the lessons given in the winter semester by introducing more advanced grammar, based on Stephan Prochazka's "Altäthiopische Studiengrammatik". Once we finish the lessons in this textbook, the remainder of the semester will be devoted to reading primary texts in Ge'ez, including chronicles, hagiographies, magic scrolls, and inscriptions.
Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel
The exam will take place on Tuesday, 27 January 2026 and is open-book, meaning that students will have access to all grammars, dictionaries, class notes, and PowerPoints.
Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
The grading system is as follows:5) 0-52: not enough (not keeping up with the homework, homework full of mistakes, poor performance in class and/or on the final exam)
4) 53-65: enough (occasionally turning in the homework, homework and performance in in-class participation and on the final exam indicates some knowledge of the subject, but with much room for improvement)
3) 66-77: satisfactory (keeping up with the homework but without retaining information, homework and/or final exam passable but still not that great)
2) 78-90: good (keeping up with the homework, homework and/or final exam could be improved in terms of certain details but otherwise okay)
1) 91-100: very good (keeping up with the homework, homework and/or final exam has only minor errors, if any)Students who score a 5 will not pass the course.

Prüfungsstoff
It is expected that students will by the time of the exam have achieved an ability to translate authentic texts in Ge'ez.
