Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Goals of this course include gaining greater proficiency in Classical Syriac through reading authentic texts in the original language. Texts will cover a wide range of topics and genres, dating from different periods, e.g. hagiographies, chronicles, and poetry, along with (potentially) magical and scientific texts.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

For the exam, students will have to demonstrate the ability to translate an excerpt from a Syriac text on their own. The exam is open-book, meaning that students may use class notes, grammars, dictionaries, and power-points from the class.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

1 (grades 100-91) very good
2 (grades 90-78) good
3 (grades 77-66) satisfactory
4 (grades 65-53) just enough
5 (grades 52-0) not enough*

*Students who earn a 5 will fail the exam.

Prüfungsstoff

The exam will consist, as noted above, of translating an excerpt from a Syriac text.

Literatur

All Syriac readings will derive from critical editions and chrestomathies. All this material will be made available to students on Moodle. Recommended secondary readings will also be uploaded to Moodle, in order to provide students with historical and cultural background to the texts that we will read in class.
